The foundation of Anadolu University goes back to 1958 at which time Eskişehir Academy of Economic
and Commercial Sciences was established. In 1982, Eskişehir Academy of Economic and Commercial
Sciences, Eskişehir Academy of Engineering and Architecture, Eskişehir School of Foreign Languages,
Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Science and Humanities, Vocational Schools in Bilecik, Afyon and
Kütahya were merged to form Anadolu University. At this time, distance education in Turkey (Anadolu University Open Education Faculty) was also established.
Today Anadolu University is a dual mode university and has both on and off campus lifelong learners. It is a state university, composed of 12 faculties. 3 of them are dedicated distance education faculties, namely the Open Education Faculty, Faculties of Business Administration and Economics.
In the mission statement of Anadolu University, lifelong learning has been referenced in the following items:
implements information and communication technologies in on-campus and distance education, and lifelong learning;
responds to the demands and needs of society with ICT based, learner-centred, on and off campus degree and certificate programs;
offers open course materials that students and the society in general can utilize without time and place limitations and without preconditions;
anticipates contemporary and future needs and realizes projects to meet the demands in specific areas like in the field of distance education.
The university's distance education system reaches the whole nation and the Turkish citizens living in Western Europe. Approximately 1.300.000 students are enrolled in distance education programs. Approximately 1 million are graduates and there are 1300 off-campus students from 15 different countries of Western Europe. All applicants are required to have a university entrance exam score.
The university is well equipped to serve its distance learning students with 3 faculties dedicated to providing learning materials and staff and an infrastructure complete with a Technical Infrastucture, Online Learning Environment, an International Relations Office, Exam Services and more.
The e-certificate programmes are of special interest as an example of non-formal learning that doesn't lead to an academic degree, but fulfils an educational need identified by private and public employers.
The e-certificate programmes in the fields of Accounting, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, Finance and Education are offered as distance educational programmes using e-learning. They are on offer three times a year to students who are typically employees of public and private institutions.
e-Certificate programmes are designed for those who would like to improve their job-related skills. Anyone who has completed high school, associate, Bachelor's, Masters or doctoral level education can apply for the e-certificate programmes.
Today there are 25 programs and the number of programs is increasing each year. It takes a participant three months to complete a program. Each program curriculum is composed of three courses.
The e-certificate programmes are internet based e-Certificate programmes offered to employees in public and private institutions e.g. banks and the Ministry of National Education.

The internal key resources for distance education are quite extensive. All the materials including textbooks and TV Programs are provided and, furthermore, the programmes are heavily based on e-learning tools and services.
Key partners: Some of SME organizations (Small and Medium Sized Enterprises) and corporations (e.g. supermarkets) encourage and provide financial support to the members or employees to attend these programs.
